The moral clarity we need

Israel and Iran are locked in their most severe direct military confrontation in decades. What began on June 13th with Israel's Operation Rising Lion has fundamentally reshaped Middle Eastern politics and exposed the West's most dangerous adversary at its weakest moment in 46 years.

This week on Craft Politics: Shuvaloy Majumdar, MP for Calgary Heritage and former senior advisor on Iran policy at Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs, joins Joseph Lavoie to explain why this conflict matters for every Western democracy and why the language of "de-escalation" is modern appeasement dressed up as diplomacy.

The nuclear sprint that forced Israel's hand. For the first time in 20 years, Iran declared it would militarily enrich uranium. The IAEA declared them non-compliant. They assembled all component parts for a nuclear missile. Israel was weeks away from facing a nuclear-armed theocratic regime committed to its destruction.

What Israel accomplished in five days. The entire upper echelon of the IRGC wiped out. One-third of Iran's ballistic missile capacity destroyed. The Natanz nuclear facility degraded. Fordo still stands under a mountain, and the question now is whether American bunker busters finish what Israel started.

Why Hezbollah didn't invade. Usually when Iran is attacked, Hezbollah launches a ground invasion. This time they openly said it's not their fight. Syria's new leader opened Damascus airspace to Israel. Iraq's militias stayed quiet. Shoe explains what Israel achieved without the long, costly military campaigns that defined Iraq and Afghanistan.

The restraint that isn't restraint. Russia and China's muted response isn't diplomatic caution. Russia just lost a third of its long-term aerial capacity in Ukraine, its Syrian assets were destroyed, and its S-300 systems were cut through like butter. China's dealing with tariff-driven inflation and mass public discontent. They have limited tools and bigger problems.

The trillion-dollar region nobody's talking about. The Abraham Accords, the India-Israel-UAE-US corridor, Saudi Arabia's decade of reforms, and a Red Sea region connecting the Mediterranean to the Indo-Pacific with a billion people and a trillion-dollar economy. If the Iranian regime falls, the potential for this region is extraordinary.

Why Canada's response is morally bankrupt. Shoe doesn't hold back. Carney and Anand's de-escalation language is weak appeasement. Their failure to protect Canadian Jews from a 250% increase in hate crimes, 75% of which target less than 1% of the population, is unconscionable. Pierre Poilievre has provided moral clarity. The government has provided moral equivalency.
